Matt is a graduate of Elizabethtown Area Senior High School and Juniata College, where he majored in Biology, Currently, he is serving as a Gastroenterology Fellow at Lehigh Valley Health Network.

When asked how he’s helping his community during the Coronavirus outbreak, Matt reports, “ I spent the month of April working in the hospital on our inpatient hepatology service caring for patients with acute and chronic liver disease.  Although not directly on the front lines, the care of patients in my field of gastroenterology has continued.  This has been able to continue due to the hard work of nurses, respiratory therapists, physicians, and the many others directly caring for COVID-19 patients.”

He continues, “The rapid implementation of telehealth options has also allowed my colleagues and I to continue to provide care for our patients while they remain safely at home.  I was also able to fall back on my internal medicine training and assist with COVID-19 screening video visits to appropriately triage, order testing, and provide clinical recommendations for people with suspected symptoms of the disease.”Commenting on how his education prepared him to serve during the pandemic, he says, “As a physician, my education has directly prepared me to be of service to my community.  I cannot say that I ever envisioned providing that service during a pandemic of this scale, but I felt better prepared for the transition into the  ‘new normal’.  While there were certainly initial uncertainties and fears, a large part of me felt called into action.  I believe my education and training up until this point have played an important role in fostering this response and desire to help others.”
